Previously: Bulletin 313: Important meeting about Ukraine next week; DNFSB hearing in Santa Fe; more, Nov 7, 2022

Dear friends and colleagues --

First (because it airs in about 2 hours), Greg was interviewed by Laura Paskus as part of New Mexico PBS's/KNME's "New Mexico in Focus" program. Laura tells us it will be online in various places, including here -- wait, it's already posted (also here, here, and here and on instagram -- somebody is being thorough)!

Second, as mentioned in the last Bulletin, we will have a public discussion and strategy meeting here in Albuquerque on Tuesday, November 15, from 6 to 8 pm (Mountain Time) at the Albuquerque Mennonite Church (map) regarding the war in Ukraine.

We will livestream this meeting via Zoom. You can join by phone or computer; the coordinates are below the main part of this message. Those not present in person will be able to listen and watch but not contribute.
We are particularly interested in reaching out to members of other New Mexico organizations interested in avoiding a larger war in Ukraine, from both on the political "left" and "right," so-called. We have precious little time to organize attendance and hope you will help us! So bring a friend or two, please.
Despite the 251 acknowledged military interventions by the U.S. military since 1991 and a batting average of about 1,000 for the bright and shining lies "justifying" those wars, there is very little organized resistance to this latest U.S. war, now featuring not only direct targeting help but also a "small force" of U.S. troops on the ground "inspecting" arms shipments" (Moon of Alabama; Douglas Macgregor) in addition to the vast supply of materiel and an unprecedented tsunami of propaganda, which has washed many brains.

We we commend our web page of independent resources on the Ukraine war it to you even though we haven't had time to update it. The authors and web pages listed on the left side are terrific. There should be others there also. Those who like a very broad canvas might enjoy Alistair Crooke, for example, to pick just one.

If you want to know what is going on the world, and you have only a finite amount of time like most of us, don't bother with the mainstream U.S. media. There are others of particular merit that many of our friends recommend; we'll get those up soon enough. We and our correspondents do most of the work for a daily news update already.

At the moment, events in and concerning Ukraine and U.S.-Russian relations are particularly murky.

We've said it before and it's still true: if you want to work for nuclear disarmament and avoid nuclear war, work for a modus vivendi between the West and Russia, and the U.S. and China.

We are hoping this meeting will lead toward practical actions and will steer it in that direction. We'll send an agenda over the weekend.

Third, the Radioactive and Hazardous Materials Committee (RHMC) of the New Mexico legislature will meet on Monday, November 14 (schedule and agenda). As the RHMC writes, "This meeting will be webcast and can be viewed by clicking the video icon beneath the meeting agenda on the [RHMC] web page. Members of the public may make comments during the public comment portion of the meeting by following instructions under the 'Extra Information' portion of the web page." See the previous Bulletin for links to prior LASG presentations. We will send a link to Monday's presentation when we finish and post it.

Fourth, the Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB) will hold a public hearing (agenda & witnesses) in Santa Fe on Wednesday, November 16, from 12:00 noon to 9:30 pm, at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 West Marcy Street (map). There will be public comment from 8:45 to 9:25 pm:

DNFSB’s goal is to gather information regarding legacy cleanup activities, nuclear safety, and increased production activities at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). The public is invited to attend the hearing and participate in the public comment portion. Individuals interested in speaking during the public comment period are encouraged to pre-register by submitting a request in writing to hearing@dnfsb.gov (link sends e-mail) or by telephone to the Office of the General Counsel at (202) 694–7000 or (800) 788-4016 by November 11, 2022 [TODAY]. Individuals may also submit written comments both prior to and at the hearing.
We urge you to come and otherwise to participate in any way you can. This is a very important hearing. We will send talking points in the coming days.

In what we said about this hearing in Bulletin 313, one statement that I (Greg) made was badly written and misleading. Here's what I meant to say:
NNSA is building up a $14 billion plutonium warhead core ("pit") production complex at LANL. Roughly double that investment will be needed to sustain production, a semi-secret reality as yet formally unannounced to Congress or the public.
We fixed this in the on-line version of Bulletin 313. These extra costs were discussed in Bulletin 307, to the extent we understand them. They are not classified secrets but rather political secrets.

Fifth, thank you all, those of you who have helped keep us financially afloat these past months. There are many ways to contribute if have a mind to do so!

Watch this space; more is on the way. If you want to be more involved, write.

Best wishes,

Greg and Trish, for the Los Alamos Study Group
