Dear friends and colleagues --

Greetings in the New Year! This short Bulletin concerns itself just with three important things: a) upcoming meetings, b) the need to sign up to the New Mexico mailing list if you want to be involved in regional activities, and c) the hope that you will continue to reach out on behalf of the "Call for Sanity, Not Nuclear Production."

  •  We have a number of meetings planned for this month, some in person and some by Zoom. Normally, the regional meetings would be posted just to our New Mexico list but we know some of you who are local haven't signed up to received local emails yet. Please do so! Just send a blank email here. Easy-peasy!
  • We will be meeting tomorrow, January 2, at 6 pm in the Gathering Room at St. John's United Methodist Church (SJUMC) in Santa Fe (map), to discuss issues related to the runaway expansion of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). If you have questions about our last two centerfold ads in the Santa Fe Reporter (here and here), bring those questions. This is a chance for new people and old to get together, build our collective knowledge base, share volunteer experiences, and plan for coming events. This and other local events are outlined in this letter, sent today to our New Mexico list.
  • On Thursday, January 4, at 11 am MST we will host a Zoom seminar and discussion on plutonium warhead core ("pit") production myths and realities ("Part II" of the 12/7/23 seminar). Newcomers to this list may not know that re-starting pit production is the largest warhead-related project in the U.S. since the Cold War and is entirely unnecessary for many years to come for "nuclear deterrence" at the same level the U.S. "enjoys" now. We will send the Zoom coordinates and more background on Wednesday, two days from now.
  • Our "registry of resistance," the "Call for Sanity, Not Nuclear Production" is growing. Please join, and help! If you don't want a new arms race, for which LANL pit production (i.e. pit production in the next 13 years) is absolutely essential, please do help. Just ask any business, nonprofit organization, or religious organization you know, or frequent, to endorse this Call! As of this writing we have 138 businesses and orgs and 656 individuals on-board. It's a super-simple declaration:
We call upon our elected officials to:
    • Opposeplutonium warhead core (“pit”) production at LANL first and foremost, but also elsewhere.
    • Opposethe design, testing, and production of new and “upgraded” nuclear weapons.
    • Prioritizeremoval and disposal of legacy plutonium waste from LANL over production of additional nuclear waste from nuclear weapons.
    • Choosehuman security, community resilience, and environmental protection over nuclear weapons production and our bloated military. We can no longer delay. We must use every opportunity, at every level of government, to prioritize human needs, invest in our communities, and build a more just and sustainable society.
Please don't be shy. If you have questions, please talk to us on Thursday, or if you live nearby please come tomorrow evening.

Meanwhile let us all redouble our work for peace in Ukraine and Palestine!

Greg, Trish, and Bex for the Los Alamos Study Group community
