Internships Available

The Los Alamos Study Group (www.lasg.org) has a limited number of internships available in 2007. The Study Group is located in the New Mexico “nuclear borderlands,” where an intense nuclear-military national security complex collides with a society often lacking basic security and characterized by income disparity, poverty, and related social ills.

Internships are somewhat flexible as to length, but will require a minimum commitment of ten weeks with starting dates in February, June, and September. Internships will be based at the main Study Group office in Albuquerque, NM and at the Study Group’s Los Alamos Disarmament Center in Los Alamos.

There will be a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 6 interns in each program. Interns will live in cooperative housing in Albuquerque or Los Alamos and will be paid $250/week for living expenses. An automobile or bicycle is helpful but not necessary.

Interns will be supervised by Study Group staff and assisted by mentors from the activist community, cooperating NGOs, and University of New Mexico faculty.

Qualified candidates will have completed undergraduate degrees or will show particular skills, relevant experience, or overall maturity and life experience. Candidates of all adult ages are encouraged to apply.

Interns will gain not just experience in nuclear weapons issues but also experience, knowledge, and skills relevant to citizen intervention in other policy areas as well.

There will be opportunities for outdoor and cultural activities in beautiful New Mexico.

Interns will participate in:

  • Researching, analyzing, and writing in depth on one of four key interrelated decisions now before Congress that will help shape U.S. nuclear weapons policy for the coming decades.
  • Lobbying Congress and working with key decisionmakers in the executive branch.
  • Publishing email “Action Alerts” for national and regional audiences.
  • Improving the Study Group web site.
  • Recruiting more local government, organizational, and business endorsements to the Call for Nuclear Disarmament.
  • Connecting regional with international disarmament voices through the Los Alamos Disarmament Center.
  • Outreach to community organizations.
  • Improving media outreach and information clearinghouse services.

These internships will be as challenging as they are rewarding. If you are interested, please send a resume or curricula vitae and a minimum of three references to:
